LIS490CIC Community Informatics Corps
Credit Hours: 2 undergraduate or graduate hours.
Description: Provides structured practical engagement
experiences in community informatics (CI), the field devoted to
understanding how communities create and apply knowledge, and use
information and communication technologies (such as in art and culture,
health, environmental protection, and education). Offers special
opportunities for students with Spanish language abilities. Classroom
activities accompanied by 80 hrs of practical engagement in approved
setting(s) that match students' schedules and interests. May continue
work begun in other classes and volunteer activities, or gain
experience in new settings. Practical engagement activities may
include: community needs assessment/evaluation; create/manage software
and websites; set up community technology centers, libraries, family
resource centers; run a community network (Prairienet); conduct
community-based education/training sessions; grant-writing, conference
planning, report-writing; design/implement information services in
community organizations. Practical engagement sites available in C-U
and surrounding rural areas, Chicago, and E. St. Louis.

The first class is a MANDATORY orientation session on Saturday, January
21, from Noon-5:00 p.m. The class will then meet twice a month on
Tuesdays from 1:00-3:50 p.m. on the following dates: 1/31, 2/14, 2/28,
3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 4/18 and 5/2. For course description, go to
