LIS490CIC Community Informatics Corps


Credit Hours: 2 undergraduate or graduate hours.
Description: Provides structured practical engagement experiences in community informatics (CI), the field devoted to understanding how communities create and apply knowledge, and use information and communication technologies (such as in art and culture, health, environmental protection, and education). Offers special opportunities for students with Spanish language abilities. Classroom activities accompanied by 80 hrs of practical engagement in approved setting(s) that match students' schedules and interests. May continue work begun in other classes and volunteer activities, or gain experience in new settings. Practical engagement activities may include: community needs assessment/evaluation; create/manage software and websites; set up community technology centers, libraries, family resource centers; run a community network (Prairienet); conduct community-based education/training sessions; grant-writing, conference planning, report-writing; design/implement information services in community organizations. Practical engagement sites available in C-U and surrounding rural areas, Chicago, and E. St. Louis.

Prerequisites: Junior, senior or graduate student standing.
Note: Meets in Room 101 CNI/Prairienet Bldg, 510 E. Daniel, C. The first class is a MANDATORY orientation session on Saturday, January 21, from Noon-5:00 p.m. The class will then meet twice a month on Tuesdays from 1:00-3:50 p.m. on the following dates: 1/31, 2/14, 2/28, 3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 4/18 and 5/2. Washington School Orientation (see below) for those interested in working with the Shadowwood
AfterSchool Program. Ann will be at the GSLIS side parking lot at 3:15 for those
needing a ride.
 

We will be meeting from 3:45 to 4:00 for all volunteers. If the
students have not filled out the background check and the volunteer
application they should come and fill out those papers at 3:30. We will
be meeting in the Library. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to be
of assistance

The BT Washington School is located at 606 E. Grove in Champaign

(at the corner of 6th and Grove; right next to the Douglass Branch Library).
